Is Biometric Authentication now Standard for Bc Office Buildings?
Biometric authentication is not yet the universal standard for all buildings, but it is rapidly moving into mainstream commercial use in Vancouver as we head toward 2026. While traditionally reserved for high-security government facilities, technology like facial recognition and fingerprint scanning is now being integrated into standard office environments.
Currently, biometric systems are recommended as best for specific high-security or high-traffic scenarios, including:
- Server rooms and data centers that house sensitive infrastructure.
- Executive floors where corporate confidentiality is a priority.
- Research laboratories protecting intellectual property.
- Facilities with large rotating staff where managing physical keys or cards is administratively difficult.
While mobile access control credentials (using smartphones) are currently becoming the standard for modern building entry due to their convenience, biometric security integration is often used as part of a multi-factor authentication (MFA) strategy to provide a higher level of security than mobile credentials alone.
